I found Hazel had the same problem. I'm going to try her fix. Thank you, Hazel.

I forget what Hazel's approach was, but IFF this is pango-1.40.9
then I think the need for gtk-doc was gone by 1.40.11 (and at some
point BLFS-svn skipped to 1.40.12) - of course we are now on a later
minor version,

The 8.1 book specified 1.40.10. Hazel used 1.40.11. That worked for me (so far--still building).
